Felted Knit and Its Care
Felted Knit, or more technically, fulling, is the process of taking a knitted piece and shrinking it through the use of moisture, heat and agitation. During the shrinking process, the fibers essentially reach out and grab each other, forming a tight bond. The end result is a fuzzy fabric that can be almost as sturdy as leather. It can even be cut without fraying!
Also, where wool in its un-felted form may be itchy, felted wool is extremely soft to the touch. Because of the way the yarn must shrink and act, only yarns with at least an 85% animal fiber content will felt properly. Thus, you will find that I mainly use 100% wool, alpaca, angora, llama, and merino wool. These fibers used by themselves or combined with other yarns such as soy and silk create wonderfully unique and beautiful fabric.
Felted knit is a very durable fabric and should give you many years of use. If your piece becomes dirty, use a brush to remove the surface dirt. If washing is necessary, I recommend handwashing with a gentle or no rinse detergent in cool water. After washing, gently pull the piece into its original shape. I can not gaurantee your piece if it is machine washed, although I have had some success washing on a gentle cycle, cool water in a front loader.
Please contact me if you would like information on resizing a piece that is either too big or too small. I will be happy to help!
